Overview
The Risk and Environmental Assessment Group solves hard real-world problems in the areas of national security, environmental responsibility, and energy reliability. Our team uses innovative quantitative risk management techniques to make our nation safer and stronger. We support decision makers by providing risk-based recommendations based on innovative decision analysis tools. Our projects give us the opportunity to work side-by-side with world class scientists and engineers, and interface with subject matter experts in a variety of fields.
We are seeking early to mid-career risk analysts who are smart, creative, and motivated to work with us on a variety of programmatic risk projects, preferably with demonstrated experience in programmatic risk management and/or quantitative risk modeling. The successful candidate will use their expertise in risk management to have sufficient depth of understanding of uncertainty methods to be comfortable applying them to one or more applications, including risk, nuclear energy, cyber security, climate change, national security, natural systems, human factors, renewable energy, regulatory compliance, and complex engineered systems. The Level 4 candidate is expected to have significant depth of experience in risk management, so is able to interpret internal/external guidance and recommend best practices to solve complex problems with innovative solutions. The candidate will work independently, foster collaboration, mentor younger staff members, and has the ability to lead moderate-sized risk projects.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Conducting quantitative risk analysis, such as Integrated Cost and Schedule Risk Analysis, and use risk assessment results to provide recommendations to decision makers.
- Assisting project managers to identify risks, developing appropriate risk characterizations, consulting with subject matter experts to construct handling plans, and conducting regular reviews to update risk information.
- Working independently with little to no oversite and providing mentoring to junior staff.
- Developing or contributing to technical risk-related products within the required level of quality, timeliness, and cost guidelines provided by the project manager.
- Publishing research and/or participating in professional activities that advance the reputation of PNNL as a premier S&T institution.
- Effectively communicating uncertainty concepts and results, including contributing to the preparation of high-quality presentations, reports, and papers.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- BS/BA and 7 years of relevant experience -OR-
- MS/MA or higher and 5 years of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Degree in a technical field such as Engineering, Operations Research, Statistics, or Economics.
- Certification in Risk Management.
- Knowledge of and practical experience in use of quantitative risk models.
- Knowledge of and practical experience in analysis methods including expert elicitation methods, Monte Carlo analysis, and decision tools.
- The successful candidate will have a broad range of skills and familiarity with several of the following areas: probability, statistics, decision analysis, risk analysis, modeling and simulation, Multi-Criteria Analysis, and mathematical modeling.
- Past performance must demonstrate attributes of being self-motivated and self-directed.
- In addition to analytical skills, a successful candidate will have excellent written and oral communications skills and experience in preparing, reviewing, and presenting the results of complex technical reports and recommendation to management.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Project, Primavera P6, Safran Risk, and/or Active Risk Manager (ARM) or other risk register software program.

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.

- Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance with 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.
- Drug Testing: All Security Clearance positions are Testing Designated Positions, which means that the candidate selected is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).
Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 months can be demonstrated.

This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). The candidate selected for this position will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing for illegal drugs, including marijuana, consistent with the Controlled Substances Act and the PNNL Workplace Substance Abuse Program.
